In the arts, we see reflections of ourselves. And in a country as diverse as Canada, we need to be looking constantly.

Since our launch in early 2005, Diaspora Dialogues has engaged over 350 emerging and well-established culturally diverse and/or Aboriginal artists from literature, spoken word poetry and theatre (occasionally dance, music and visual art as well), in commissioned new work, a robust mentoring program, a monthly multidisciplinary reading/performance series and artist-run workshops for at-risk youth of high-school age. We also host professional development seminars for the writers/artists who have come through any of our programs.

We partner with many organizations to produce the series of 15+ reading/performance events each year, including Harbourfront Centre, Luminato, Nuit Blanche, The Word On The Street, Toronto Public Library, and many others.

Our commissioning/mentoring program produces a yearly anthology series, TOK: Writing the New Toronto, available in bookstores or online here!

In 2008, we commissioned works set in Montréal (Rawi Hage), Halifax (Shauntay Grant) and Vancouver (Jen Sookfong Lee).

In addition to creating collaborative opportunities for writers/artists to connect with each other and with new audiences across cultural and disciplinary backgrounds, Diaspora Dialogues works to increase the audience for the arts among Canada’s ethnocultural communities by devoting significant effort to ongoing audience development.

Through our activities, we help develop new networks and professional relationships between the arts community, community-based organizations and organizations serving newcomers, thus expanding community access.

We are grateful for the support of MaytreeCanadian Heritage, Ontario Arts CouncilCanada Council for the Arts, the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council, the George Cedric Metcalf Charitable Foundation, TO Live With Culture and the Vital Toronto Fund at the Toronto Community Foundation, and RBC Foundation.
